Phivi Antoniou

Phivi Antoniou is a sculptor and installation artist whose practice unfolds through the interplay of material, space, and human presence. Based in Cyprus, she works primarily with metal, glass, and fabric, creating site-specific installations defined by clarity, sensitivity, and spatial tension. Her work examines the relationships between the individual and the environment, revealing the subtle physical, emotional, and atmospheric forces that shape the way humans experience space.
Materiality is central to her approach. Through methods such as suspension, deconstruction, reconstruction, and embroidery, she reinterprets industrial materials, revealing their capacity for elegance and poetic transformation. She preserves traces of fabrication and intervention within each piece, allowing the materials’ histories and inherent properties to guide the final form.
Her installations are characterised by minimalism, balance, and precision. Many works appear to hover or lightly occupy their surroundings, creating a sense of calm weightlessness. Patterns, repetition, and transparency invite light and movement into the work, while the restraint of form leaves space for quiet emotional resonance. Guided by a human-centred sensibility, she explores universal concerns, such as presence, vulnerability, desire, tension, and the ways bodies intuitively respond to material and spatial conditions.
Phivi Antoniou holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the University of Nicosia (Cyprus), graduating summa cum laude at the top of her department. She also completed an MPhil and PhD in Arts, Culture, and Education at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). Her work has been exhibited in various locations in Cyprus and internationally, including in Strasbourg, and she has created several public installations, most notably a commissioned project for the Municipality of Strovolos.
Across her practice, she creates environments in which material, space, and human presence intertwine, offering experiences that are minimal, immersive, and deeply connected to the body.
